Chronicle of round 9 of the 5th edition of El Llobregat Open Chess Tournament

Dr. Yi Ling, founding partner of Linkchina Consulting, performing the traditional bell ringing that starts the games of the Llobregat Open Chess Tournament, accompanied by Jorge I. Aguadero Casado, editor-in-chief of Peón de Rey.

We could say that round 9 of the V El Llobregat Open Chess Tournament is the round of dreams, of those who are as long as they are and of those who are not as long as they are not. The seeded players who were left behind know that nothing will give them back the lost effort; those who have survived the passing of the days of play know that they are missing the last step, the one that defines if they will be chosen for glory or if they will immolate themselves at the foot of the altar of Caissa, the muse of chess. “And it was all a lie…”, say those who, having believed that they would eat the world, have been devoured by it.

We have come so far and some have lost so much… but we must seize happiness where we find it and not regret it. Let these lines be a tribute to those who will rise after the fleeting defeat in the game, like a Phoenix over the embers, and who will sit down again in front of the board with renewed strength. The love for chess consists in overcoming setbacks. On this occasion we have had the honor of receiving Dr. Yi Ling, founding partner of Linkchina consulting, who has made the traditional ringing of the bell that starts the games of the Llobregat Open Chess Tournament, and whom the chronicler has had the pleasure of accompanying. Dr. Ling, in addition, has performed the kick-off on the first board, a ceremony that we have celebrated for the first time.

During the course of this ninth round, we received a visit from a delegation of the “Junts per Catalunya” party, currently the main opposition force in the Parliament of Catalonia. In the photo, from left to right, Ramon Barau Requena (local leader), Jordi Turull (ex-deputy and Secretary General of the party), the main referee of the tournament, Hernan Siludaki and Isidre Sierra (mayor of Sant Climent).

On the sporting side, the result again of draws on the first three boards takes us directly to a frenetic final round, in which the players will give their all to compete for the financial prizes. Leading the provisional standings are Yahli Sokolovsky (7.5 points), Cristobal Henriquez (7) and Ido Gorshtein (6.5), followed by… up to 5 players with the same score as the third! As we anticipated, there will be fire on the board. In Group B, Piotr Dukaczewski (7), Jacek Stachanczyk (6.5) and Aleksandr Avanesyan (5.5) lead. In Group C, Javier Sanz (7), Narek Danielyan (6,5) and Hailey Ruth Van De Graaff (6) lead.
