New tables: the aspirant does not risk
If anyone expected Nepomniachtchi to risk more with the white pieces they were very wrong. Enough time has passed since the start of the match to begin to understand the preconceived strategies of both players. In the case of the Russian player it seems clear that containment has been imposed, above all, perhaps thinking that this would somehow force the champion to expose himself more in the melee. Certainly, the course of the second game seems to prove the Russian player right.
But of course, Carlsen is also not the type of player to overexpose himself. It just doesn’t suit his style, and good proof of this is that he has retained his crown several times simply by waiting for the quick games in the tiebreaker. But watch out! Nepomniachtchi is undoubtedly more dangerous than Caruana or Karjakin in this discipline, which adds more elements of suspense to this world championship.
In any case, we saw again the anti-Marshall system in the Spanish Opening in today’s game, a battle horse of the challenger when playing White. And although the Russian tried another continuation, Carlsen was able to free his game with the break 13…d5. After the change of checkers on move 23, it was an even endgame, with a draw being signed on move 43, after a triple repetition of moves and immediately after the first time control on move 40.
Thursday is a rest day and the sixth game is played on Friday, in which the world champion will lead the white pieces. The World Championship will be played from November 26 to December 15 in a best of 14 games, and if they finish tied 7-7, a tie-breaker will be played in rapid games.
